The retirement age in Russia will still be raised. For a well-deserved rest, men will be able to leave at 65, and women at 63. Changes in legislation will occur gradually - until 2034 inclusive.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev first spoke about the need to raise the retirement age back in June this year. Under his leadership, the Government has developed a bill that will enter into force in 2019. The increase in the retirement age will occur gradually - over 10 years for men and 16 years for women.

Pros and cons of raising the retirement age

The majority of Russians opposed raising the retirement age. People thought that the change would happen dramatically, one day. But this is not the case. It is not worth waiting for an increase in the retirement age in 2018 - the changes will begin next year. The table below illustrates the essence of the reform.

The government looks differently at increasing the retirement age. According to the deputies, the new pension reform is a necessary measure. Several years ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin set a task - to index pensions. It is impossible to increase the size of social payments without raising the retirement age. Otherwise, the pension system will be imbalanced in 5-10 years. In other words, if the retirement age is not increased, the budget simply will not find funds for social benefits.

Increasing the retirement age for early adopters

Citizens who have the right to take a well-deserved rest ahead of schedule will also feel the effect of the pension bill on themselves. For this category, the age will increase proportionally and gradually.

Recall that the following categories of citizens have the right to early retirement:

  • mothers with many children who have given birth to five or more children, all of whom have reached the age of eight;
  • fathers, mothers and guardians of disabled children who raised them up to the age of 8;
  • mothers with many children who have given birth and raised two or more children, living in the Far North and having a work experience of at least 12 years;
  • citizens of the Russian Federation who became disabled during military operations and conflicts;
  • visually impaired;
  • workers of places of the Far North and equivalent territories, whose work experience exceeds the mark of 15–20 years.

The issue of indexation of pensions and an increase in the retirement age for early-term employees is still open. The deputies put forward proposals for the inhabitants of the northern regions. For them, the retirement age will be raised to 58 and 60 years (women and men, respectively).

The increase in the retirement age in Russia since 2019 has caused a flurry of negativity on the network. On sites discussing the bill, many citizens call the reform a mockery. Women give sharply negative assessments of the reform, according to whom, "increasing the retirement age for women by 8 years is just a disaster." The fair sex is proposing to make them a four-day work week and increase their annual leave from 28 days to two months. Otherwise, according to commentators, few will live to see the new retirement age.
