Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your book for submission to publishers. You won't get another chance to make a first impression on editors and publishers. Therefore, first do the proofreading of the text. If you are not 100% sure of your literacy, ask someone close or acquaintance to edit your book. You can also pay a professional proofreader to bring your text to perfection.

Please note that a huge stream of manuscripts comes to publishers every day. Your book should stand out from the crowd. To submit a book to a publisher, you need to write a synopsis and abstract.

Synopsis is a summary of the work, set out on 1-2 sheets. It should contain all the main events set out succinctly and clearly. Make your synopsis so that it is clear who the heroes of the book are, in what circumstances the events unfold.

Write a short annotation indicating what you consider the most striking and most important in your book. Annotation should arouse interest in the text, arouse the desire to read the book. The annotation should contain a hint or indication of the intrigue of your work.

Step 2

Create a letter template for mailing to publishers. The overwhelming majority of modern publishers accept manuscripts for review by e-mail. Therefore, there is no need to fiddle with paper manuscripts and postal or courier shipments. In the letter, justify your appeal to the publisher.

Write down why, in your opinion, the manuscript might be in demand by readers. Highlight the main idea of your book, its main advantages. Next, indicate the genre in which the work is written, its volume.

If you have previously had any publications (published stories, newspaper publications, publications in online competitions), indicate this in the letter. Also provide brief information about yourself: age, education, occupation, etc. Attach your synopsis, abstract and text of the work to the letter.

Write down for yourself the addresses of the publishers that are listed on their official sites on the Internet. Send your book to all available addresses. Record which publishers and when you sent the book. This information will be useful to you in the future.

Step 3

Don't wait for publishers' editors to start responding to your emails. Certainly, some of the editors consider it necessary to inform the author of their verdict. But it's in your best interest to contact the publishers yourself. Call the publisher, tell them your last name and first name, then check if they received your manuscript. It is possible that you sent the manuscript to a non-existent address, or your letter got lost in a stream of spam, or another editor is in charge of the direction you need. Please ask for the email address of the person responsible for handling manuscripts related to your genre.

Also ask for his name, surname and work phone number. After that, send the letter again to the specified address. Be sure to make sure the editor you want received the manuscript text. Check with the editor when it is best to contact him for his verdict.

Step 4

After you have sent the manuscripts to all the editors you are interested in, make sure that the editors received them, wait for the agreed time. Then call all the editors. Check if they are interested in the manuscript. In case of strong interest, the editor can contact you himself without waiting for your call. If people are interested in your book, do not rush to agree to the first offer. First, make sure that this is the only sentence. If several publishers are interested in your manuscript at once, ask them to announce the terms of publication. Ask to be sent the copyright agreement. Study the proposed contracts carefully. You must clearly understand in what form the book will be published, what your fee will be, on what terms you are selling the rights to the manuscript to the publisher. After examining the proposals, agree to the one that suits you in all respects.
