You have written your own work - a story, novel, detective story, or a small collection of children's stories. And now you want to publish it. You can contact one of the publishing houses that produce books, but today rarely anyone buys copyrights from writers or pays royalties for a work. More often publishers do prepress and print circulation of the book at the expense of the author. And their services are not at all cheap. It is best to organize the entire process of publishing a work yourself.
Instructions
Step 1
The first step is to find a good proofreader and give him your manuscript for proofreading. Even if you are sure that you have written a work without a single grammatical error, do not neglect the services of a specialist, so that later you do not blush for not putting a comma or an extra letter in the word.
Step 2
Next, the manuscript needs to be typeset, to make a ready-made layout of the book. Determine what format your work should have, the font of the text, the design of the pages. Do not forget that the number of pages of the book must be a multiple of 16 or 8 - this is required by the rules of typography. Today, the computer program InDesign is increasingly used for the layout of books. You can master it yourself, there is nothing difficult in it, or ask an experienced layout designer for help.
Step 3
Determine whether your book will be soft or hard bound. Will you use a super cover or go without it. Create a bright, eye-catching book cover that matches your theme.
Step 4
After the book is wrapped, the proofreader must read it again. It is not rare that "technical" errors appear during layout, so it is better to insure yourself against them.
Step 5
Each book should have its own number - ISBN. To get it, you need to contact the Book Chamber, pay the state fee and submit an application along with the title page and technical page of the book. As a rule, the ISBN is issued immediately. The information received in the Book Chamber must be entered on the technical page.
Step 6
The finished layout is sent in electronic form to the printing house. Call several printing houses in your city, send them the technical characteristics of your book so that they can calculate the cost of printing. You can also ask the printing house for samples of products to evaluate the quality of their work. Enter into an agreement with a company in which you are satisfied with both quality and price.
Step 7
Keep track of the process of work of the printing house, pay attention to whether the colors on the colored pages of the book and the cover coincide with those that you chose for your book. As a rule, a small edition is prepared within two weeks.
Step 8
Then, at your discretion, you can distribute your work - give it to friends and acquaintances, conclude sales contracts with bookstores. One copy of the book must be taken to the Book Chamber.
Step 9
And in order to protect yourself from all sorts of encroachments on your intellectual property, submit documents for obtaining copyright for the work to the Ministry of Justice. If your book does not contain information prohibited in the country or quotations from the president or other dignitaries not approved by the competent authorities, then there will be no problems with obtaining copyright.
