How much can you entrust to a credit institution without fear of losing your invested funds?

Today, Russians who open a deposit in a bank can be sure that their savings are protected. The safety of part of the deposit in the event of bankruptcy or revocation of its license is guaranteed by the state. The amount of the state-insured deposit is 700 thousand rubles. The deposit is considered insured from the moment when the bank becomes a member of the deposit insurance system. If at the time of opening the account the bank was already a member of the system, then the deposit is insured from the moment of the conclusion of the agreement.

Step 2

What kind of deposits are insured?

All ruble and foreign currency deposits, demand deposits, current accounts and funds on debit plastic cards are subject to insurance. Also subject to insurance:

• registered savings certificates, if the surname, name and patronymic of its owner are indicated on the form of such a certificate;

• since 2014, the funds of entrepreneurs in their accounts are subject to insurance.

Step 3

Which deposits are not insured?

Those that have been opened to bearer and are certified by the available bearer passbook or savings certificate. Funds are also not insured:

• placed by citizens on the accounts of branches of Russian banks that are located abroad;

• funds held in unallocated metal accounts, since they are considered not money, but valuable metals;

• electronic money in settlements - payments and transfers through payment systems, which are made without opening an account, are not subject to refund if the bank's license is revoked.

Step 4

Who makes payments in the event of bankruptcy or revocation of its license?

Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA). It acts as a kind of safety cushion designed to compensate Russians for the funds invested in the bank in the event that a credit institution cannot fulfill its obligations to depositors. It does not pay compensation on its own, involving authorized banks in this process. At the occurrence of each insured event, one or several banks are appointed, which will deal with payments to the population of lost funds. Most often, the DIA assigns these actions to VTB 24 Bank, Nomos Bank, SMP Bank.
