The cleaning up of the banking sector is in full swing. Every week there is information that another bank was deprived of its license and stopped its work. Against such a negative background, many Russians became interested in the question of which banks were closed, and what to do for those citizens who kept money in such banks.

The Central Bank explains the massive revocation of licenses by the need to clear the banking market of unscrupulous players, as well as set an example for those credit institutions that continue to pursue risky credit policies and violate the requirements of domestic legislation. However, the actions of the regulator are increasingly leading to the fact that citizens no longer trust their savings to banks. At the same time, the number of fraudsters is growing, taking advantage of the fact that not everyone knows which banks closed in 2014 and conduct their dishonest business under the guise of already inactive credit organizations.

How to find out if a bank is working

If you need to find out whether a bank is active and whether its license has been revoked, the easiest way to find out is on the official website of the Bank of Russia. The section "Information on credit institutions" contains a list of all banks that have worked since 1992 and continue to work on the territory of the Russian Federation. It is enough to enter the name of the credit institution or its registration number in the search field, and you will find out whether the bank is working, whether its license has already been revoked, or whether it has been liquidated.

In a more visual form, information about closed banks is presented on the Banki.ru website in the "Memory Book" section. It contains a list of all non-performing credit institutions as of the current date. This information is updated daily.

Which banks are already closed

Several years ago, no more than two dozen banks parted with a license every year. In 2013, already 30 banks were closed; by September 2014, more than fifty credit institutions had already lost their licenses. Moreover, among them there are banks of various levels. While the revocations of licenses from banks at the bottom of the rating are relatively quiet, revocations of licenses from banks in the first hundred are always accompanied by the excitement of depositors and panic among the companies that kept current accounts there.

Banks such as Stroycredit, My Bank, Eurotrust, BANK FININVEST, Interindustry Banking Corporation, EUROSIB BANK, Russian Land Bank, Sovinkom, Zapadny, Monolit, which lost their licenses in 2014, have accumulated hundreds of thousands of depositors in their accounts. Naturally, the closure of these banks was widely reported in the press and on television.

What to do for clients of closed banks

Depositors of closed banks are reimbursed by the Deposit Insurance Agency. Within 2 weeks after the license was revoked, it will start paying amounts up to 700 thousand rubles through authorized banks. Money in excess of this amount will be returned to citizens only after the end of the bankruptcy procedure. The same procedure for compensation is provided for legal entities. Moreover, the amount of compensation directly depends on how much money the liquidator will be able to bail out as a result of the sale of the bank's property and assets.
