It happens that the computer's network card fails. In such a situation, it must be replaced. When choosing and installing a new card and installing it, you must adhere to a number of rules.
Instructions
Step 1
In all cases, the operation to replace the network card should be performed with a de-energized computer. But before disconnecting the power cord from its power supply, be sure to shut down the operating system correctly.
Step 2
If the network card built into the motherboard is out of order, disable it in CMOS Setup. Then purchase a new PCI card and install it in an empty slot. Move the cable into it.
Step 3
If a regular network card is out of order, buy a new one with the same interface (ISA or PCI) and with the same input (for twisted pair or coaxial cable). The gigabit network card can be replaced with a regular one, also designed for twisted pair, but the maximum data transfer rate will drop. The same will happen when replacing a 100-megabit card with a 10-megabit one.
Step 4
Disconnect the cable from the card before replacing the card. If it is coaxial, you can only disconnect it by unplugging the power cords from the computer and all peripheral devices. Then remove the screw that secures the metal board to the case. Remove the old card from the slot, insert the new one, and then secure it with the same screw. Connect the cable to it.
Step 5
In Windows operating system up to XP inclusively, drivers from the old one may not be suitable for the new card. This is unlikely to happen on Linux 2.4 and above, or Windows Vista and later. The Linux kernel does not distinguish between network cards from different manufacturers at all and works with all of them in the same way. The only thing that may not work in it is the old boards with the ISA interface.
Step 6
Configure the card using your operating system. Choose the correct mode of its operation: fixed local IP or DHCP. If your provider keeps a record of MAC addresses, tell him the corresponding parameter of the new card. To do this, run the ifconfig command on Linux, and ipconfig / All on Windows.
Step 7
Make sure the new card is working.
