The number of bookstores has increased quite dramatically over the past decade. No one has any doubts - reading is falling into fashion again. However, people read, as a rule, recognized authors or laureates of literary awards, and even then not all of them. It is quite difficult to promote a book by an unknown author. How to do it?

Instructions

Step 1

A book, like any product, needs advertising. Perhaps someone will be jarred by the fact that a book can be considered a commodity at all, but the fact remains: in market relations, almost everything can be called a commodity. Consequently, the book should be promoted in the same way as other goods - of course, subject to certain conditions.

Step 2

A book, even for reading lovers, is not an essential commodity, so it makes no sense to expect high sales after one or two promotions. Promotion of a book is a rather lengthy process. The promoted book does not live long on the shelves, one can recall at least the writer Haruki Murakami. Until 2002, his books were gathering dust on the shelves, since no one knew about him. Then, after a fairly competent advertising campaign, he became one of the most popular writers among young people. Now, despite the fact that he continues to write, his popularity is low. The very first books that so excited young people in 2002-2003 cannot be found at all.

Step 3

Each book has its own target audience. Popular sentimental novels and detective stories are read mainly by women of mature age, science fiction and fantasy are read by adolescents and young people, prose writers known since Soviet times (Kabakova, Petsukha, Aksenova) are middle-aged people, fashionable young writers are students and young professionals. To promote a book, it is important to define its target audience. The methods of advertising the book depend on what kind of audience it will be.

Step 4

For those who can afford expensive ways to promote books, advertising in the subway is suitable. Many of us have seen ads like "Ustinov is delighted … from the new novel of the writer NN". You can order reviews from well-known print media (for example, in Literaturnaya Gazeta or even in Kommersant). In stores, the book should be among the best sellers, best of all with the mark "we recommend".

Step 5

But the majority of not very well-known authors or those who want to promote books of such authors do not have the proper financial resources. In such cases, you will have to use less effective, but also sometimes quite successful methods. This is, first of all, promotion on the Internet - the creation of groups in social networks, discussion on thematic forums, advertising banners, etc. Sometimes authors or those who need to promote books use rather extravagant methods: they agree with the management of coffee shops to have their books (or chapters from them) on the tables, independently distribute chapters from their books in stores or near them. The distribution is carried out free of charge, as a rule, in order for the reader to become interested and buy the whole book in order to find out the continuation of what is described in it. Do not forget about word of mouth - this is an effective method in all cases. First, your acquaintances will read the book, then recommend it to their friends, and so on. It is important that they are interested in literature.
