Step 1
To begin with, it is important to understand the principle of building a BIC and its structure. 1 and 2 digits in its number indicate the country code in the banking system, therefore in Russia all BICs begin with "04".

3 and 4 digits - the code of the region, which is determined according to the All-Russian Classifier of Objects of Administrative Territorial Division (OKATO). For example, for Moscow it is "45", for the Ivanovo region - "24", for the Krasnodar Territory - "03". You can find the area code in the legal reference systems.

5 and 6 digits of the BIK - the number of the settlement and cash center through which the bank makes payments. 7, 8 and 9 digits - the conditional number of the bank in the settlement network of the Central Bank of Russia, in which its correspondent account is opened.

If you have an accounting program at your disposal, you can find out the name and other details of the credit institution from the BIK directory. To do this, use the search function, enter the nine-digit bank code, and you will receive the required information. But do not forget to regularly update the information, since banks can change the name and status, and in addition, the possibility of revoking a license and bankruptcy of any of them cannot be ruled out.

If you use the Client-Bank system in your work, determine the name and correspondent account of the credit institution according to the BIK directory, which is opened when generating payment orders. Such programs usually contain up-to-date information, so there is no need to update it.

You can also find out the bank by BIC using legal reference databases. However, some of them provide information in the context of territories, so determine by 3 and 4 digits the BIC code of the subject of the Russian Federation according to OKATO and find the required bank in the list of credit institutions registered in this region.

In addition, official and up-to-date information about banks and their details can be obtained from the website of the Central Bank of Russia www.cbr.ru. Open the Information tab of the Bank of Russia Interregional Informatization Center, download the distribution kit of the BIK Directory software package to your computer and follow the installation instructions. Use the search function: press the F5 key and dial from 3 to 9 digits of the BIK.

With the help of the Bank of Russia program, you will receive not only the name of the bank and its correspondent account, but also phone numbers, legal address, you will be able to find out the possibility of using electronic settlements and exchange of electronic documents, and also determine the current state of affairs of the bank (change of details, revocation of a license, blocking expense transactions, etc.).
