CBS NEWS told an amazing story about retirees who have been winning millions of dollars in the lottery absolutely legally for several years.
The story began when retired couple Jerry and Margie, living in a quiet state of Michigan and raising 6 children, found a mathematical way to win the lottery. Jerry has always been considered a good mathematician. He graduated with an undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University.
One morning, a retired mathematician noticed a brochure about the new "Winfall" lottery. According to the rules, if the potential jackpot reaches $ 5,000,000, but no one finds a ticket with a combination of six numbers, the entire winnings must be divided into equal parts between tickets that match 5, 4 or 3 numbers.
After reading this rule, our mathematician calculated that if you buy 57 tickets for an amount of $ 1100, then, according to the laws of probability theory, he should have about 20 tickets with three digits.
The calculations are done, and Jerry decided to try his theory. So, having bought tickets for $ 3600, our pensioners took about $ 6300. And so it began.
Over the years, they bought tickets for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, and even, having told their friends about their scheme, opened a millionaire club.
In 2011, reporters from The Boston Globe noticed unusual ticketing activity in a small store. It turned out that there is another group of people, consisting of students, who also discovered this scheme.
An investigation began, but it did not lead to anything, since there is no such law according to which it is impossible to buy many tickets.
In total, a couple of pensioners, in terms of rubles, earned almost 2 billion rubles, or about 26 million US dollars.
Hollywood producers have already gathered to shoot a film about this amazing story.
