An attacker can wait for you everywhere: at a gas station, near a payment terminal, or in a supermarket.
Thermal cameras for smartphones are now available everywhere. They are inexpensive, but with their help it became possible to quickly and accurately determine the security code of the credit card. A new method, widely used by fraudsters, is based on reading the heat waves emanating from the fingers at the moment of entering the PIN-code.
Previously, a special infrared camera was needed to read such information. Now a similar function is available in almost any modern smartphone.
How the process works
An intruder is nearby when you pay with a credit card and enter your PIN. He will not look over your shoulder, hoping to find out the coveted numbers of the code. It is enough for him to take a picture of the payment terminal using a thermal camera immediately after you have made the payment. Now he has a PIN-code at his disposal, and the numbers that were dialed later will be brighter in the image.
How to protect yourself from this type of fraud
Be sure to touch several adjacent buttons with the fingers of your other hand when typing the code. This will confuse potential robbers and prevent them from guessing the security code of your plastic card.
