When downloading a file from the Internet, you may be suspicious of its integrity, origin or correctness of data transfer. In this regard, in order to protect your computer from damaged programs or viruses, it is worth checking the downloaded documents by the size of the checksum.
Instructions
Step 1
Refer to the website of the official developer of the downloaded program. Currently, there are many resources that provide these applications for download for free, but there is a risk that the document contains a virus or does not work correctly. To check its compliance, you need to find the SHA1 hashing type on the official website in the software information. Rewrite this number or copy it into a text document.
Step 2
Download the HashTab application to determine the checksum on the Internet. You can find this program on many specialized sites. To be sure of the downloaded file, it is best to use the official source at the link https://hashtab.ru/. Please note that this software application comes in two flavors: for Windows and for Mac. Check the downloaded document with an antivirus.
Step 3
Read the ReadMe document and proceed to install the HashTab utility. After the end of the installation process, it is advisable to restart the computer.
Step 4
Click on the file for which you want to define the checksum with the right mouse button. Open the "Properties" section. If you have installed the HashTab correctly, then in the window that appears there will be a tab “File hashes”. If you have Mac OS installed, then after right-clicking on the file, go to the File Hashes section and click on the More button in the window that appears. If these tabs are missing, then the installation of the HashTab was not performed correctly.
Step 5
Wait for the end of the process of calculating the checksum. Copy the result or rewrite it on a separate sheet. Compare the checksum with the SHA1 hash type value for the given file. If the amounts are the same, then you can safely install the application. If not, reload the document again or use another source.
