Tonne-kilometer is a unit of measure that is used in the transport of goods. It combines two indicators: the number of tons of cargo transported and the distance. Tonne-kilometers are recorded in such primary documentation as the waybill of a car. It is for tons and ton-kilometers that the driver's salary is paid under the piece-rate direct system of remuneration.

Step 1
One tonne-kilometer is a cargo weighing one tonne, which is transported over a distance of one kilometer. So, to calculate the tonne-kilometers indicator, multiply the weight of the cargo by the mileage of the vehicle delivering the goods. For example, a truck has transported 5 tons of cargo over a distance of 200 kilometers: multiply 5 by 200 and get 1000 ton-kilometers.

The economic indicator obtained as a result of the calculation is used in order to estimate the volume of cargo transportation by this type of transport. In addition, this indicator of cargo turnover can be used to assess the maximum throughput of the transport lines of an enterprise and to compare the mechanical strength of different vehicles.

Calculation of the given ton-kilometer is also possible. This indicator characterizes the volume of all transportation of passengers and goods carried out by individual modes of transport. To calculate tonne-kilometers shown, add tonne-kilometers with passenger-kilometers.
Step 4
To characterize the efficiency of using the vehicle with which the cargo is delivered, the utilization factor of the cargo capacity is calculated. This indicator reflects the degree of utilization of cargo spaces of various vehicles. For example, for freight cars, the utilization rate of the cargo capacity is calculated as a quotient when the useful volume is divided by the total volume.

The freight turnover indicator is significantly influenced by the type of roads along which the goods are transported. Currently, there are three types of roads in Russia: one-way and paved roads, paved and two-way roads, and unpaved roads. Naturally, the speed of transportation of goods on the roads of the first type will be much higher than the speed of movement of a loaded vehicle on unpaved roads.
